Live 5-2-1-0 Family Physician Toolkit: MI Training Course Flyer
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based collaborative, patient-centred style of communication that can help strengthen personal motivation to change. This MI Training Course was co-developed with UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Continuing Professional Development to scale up the in-person MI training offered as a component of the Live 5-2-1-0 Family Physician Toolkit.
The course takes 2 hours to complete, is free, and provides CME accreditation (Earn up to 2.0 Mainpro+/MOC Section 3 credits). It was designed for all primary healthcare providers that work with children and their families. Click here to learn more and to register.
Live 5-2-1-0, in partnership with the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice, developed and piloted a Live 5-2-1-0 Family Physician Toolkit which aimed to support Family Physicians in making BMI assessment and healthy living discussions part of regular family practice visits with children and youth. The Toolkit is based on existing evidence-based best practice, and provides information and resources to support family physicians in accurately measuring and classifying BMI percentiles in pediatric patients, assessment of healthy and unhealthy lifestyle choices, respectful discussions around healthy behaviours, motivational interviewing to support effective behaviour change, and other resources available locally to support families in making healthy choices. Other key elements of the Toolkit include:
- The Live 5-2-1-0 Assessment and Management Flow Chart (based on the ‘Pathway for the Identification, Assessment and Management of Overweight and Obese Children & Youth’ developed by Child Health BC in the Consensus Meeting on Weight Management for Children and Youth Final Report)
- The Live 5-2-1-0 Healthy Habits Questionnaires (supporting tool for use with the Assessment and Management Flow Chart)
- The Live 5-2-1-0 Readiness Ruler (supporting tool for use with the Assessment and Management Flow Chart)
- The Live 5-2-1-0 Healthcare Provider’s Guide to Respectfully Discuss Weight with Pediatric Patients and their Families
