Live 5-2-1-0 Communities

Partners and stakeholders right across British Columbia are joining together to take a coordinated approach to childhood health promotion through reinforcing activities that share the Live 5-2-1-0 message and support healthy behaviours among children and families.

Pilot Project

The Live 5-2-1-0 initiative was launched as a pilot project in 2009 within the communities of Abbotsford and Prince George. During this first phase we focused on building community-based partnerships and identifying needs and opportunities to promote healthy behaviours and prevent chronic diseases in children such as type 2 diabetes. In collaboration with these community partners and as a result of priorities and preferences they had identified, we adapted and adopted the ‘5-2-1-0’ message to create BC’s version, ‘Live 5-2-1-0’!

Second Phase

Beginning in 2011, the second phase focused on supporting pilot communities, Abbotsford, Chilliwack (2012), Kimberley (2013), and Hope (2014) as they identified, developed, and implemented local strategies to share and support Live 5-2-1-0 in their respective regions.

Third Phase

During the third phase, we formally adopted the Collective Impact Framework and established our Live 5-2-1-0 Knowledge Exchange Platform to connect community stakeholders and champions across the province and provide them with opportunities to share insights, knowledge, and cross implement best practice solutions. We continued to support existing Live 5-2-1-0 communities while also welcoming new ones including Delta, Maple Ridge, and New Westminster in 2015 and Nanaimo, Surrey, and Tri-Cities in 2016.

The Live 5-2-1-0 Community Network Continues to Expand!

The Live 5-2-1-0 initiative is excited to now be in its fourth phase. With a new expanded definition of a Live 5-2-1-0 ‘Community’ we are motivated to work alongside existing and new partners to identify opportunities to better support healthy behaviours in children.  With a commitment to integrating new research and best practices into our work and our approach, we continue to co-produce courses, tools, and resources to fill the gaps in learning opportunities for healthcare providers, educators and other stakeholders who influence the environments in which children live, learn, and play. Some recent projects include:
