Measuring Impact

The network of Live 5-2-1-0 communities continues to expand across BC, bringing opportunities for new collaborations and knowledge exchange among Live 5-2-1-0 partners. We are committed to measuring Live 5-2-1-0’s impact locally within communities and overall as a provincial initiative.

Live 5-2-1-0 provides a framework of action for local community leaders to make changes to their programs, practices, policies, and environments so that it is easier for kids to eat well, be active, and limit screen time. Live 5-2-1-0’s approach is based on a socio-ecological understanding of behaviour change, meaning that individual behaviours are driven by multiple factors (such as families’ behaviours, access to services and facilities, neighbourhood surroundings, built environments, etc.). As such, sustainable behaviour change is most likely to occur if policy and environmental changes address these factors so that families are surrounded by healthy options.

We support Live 5-2-1-0 partners to track these community- and systems-level changes through its Partnership Tracking Tool (see below) and to evaluate their effectiveness using different methods.

Partnership Tracking Tool

The Live 5-2-1-0 Partnership Tracking Tool (PTT) supports a shared measurement system among Live 5-2-1-0 communities, providing a platform to gather ongoing information on process indicators including local multi-sector partner engagement, implementation of local policy, practice and environmental changes, and distribution of Live 5-2-1-0 resources through partners across the community.
Contact us for more information and support if you’re interested in using the PTT or other evaluation resources in your community.

Evaluating Sector-specific Interventions

We also assist communities to evaluate some local sector-specific interventions, and use these evaluations to refine and improve strategies and resources that are shared between communities. Some of the sector-specific intervention evaluations we have supported or are currently supporting include:

  • Live 5-2-1-0 Family Physician Toolkit pilot in Chilliwack and Kimberley
  • Live 5-2-1-0 Playboxes in Abbotsford and Chilliwack
  • Live 5-2-1-0 Grocery Store ‘Nudge’ pilot project in Kimberley
  • Live 5-2-1-0 Healthcare Provider Toolkit in three pilot clinics at BC Children’s Hospital

Knowledge Exchange

At the provincial level, we evaluate knowledge exchange of ideas, resources, tools, and strategies between Live 5-2-1-0 communities. Supported by a Knowledge to Action grant provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), we are continually exploring the most effective ways to connect communities across the province to build capacity within the Live 5-2-1-0 network.

We support continuous communication with and between Live 5-2-1-0 communities through:

  • Live 5-2-1-0 website and resource map
  • Inter-community webinars
  • Annual Live 5-2-1-0 provincial summit for communities
  • Live 5-2-1-0 community listserv

Outcome Measurement

Live 5-2-1-0 is partnering with the Human Early Learning Partnership (HELP) team at UBC to develop a process for ongoing population-level measurement of child health behaviours related to the 5-2-1-0 recommendations through a pilot of an adapted Middle Years Development Instrument (MDI) tool. More information on this evaluation project will be available soon.
